Thrills and Spills at Thruxton for Taylor
The fastest circuit in the UK payed host to rounds 10,11 &12 of the HI-Q MSA BritishTouring Car Championship. The Circuit is of course Thruxton. With speeds reaching in excess of 150mph the racing was going to fast and furious.
After the damage sustained at Donington, Alan Taylor and his Robertshaw Racing team arrived at Thruxton looking for a change in fortune after a poor start to the season so far.
The first free practice was held in dry but windy conditions and with tyre wear such a crutial factor at the high speed Hampshire circuit, finding that perfect set up would prove to bea challenge for all the teams. The session was going well for Alan who was setting some good lap times but towards the end had a small moment at the 120mph Goodwood Corner where he ran wide on to the grass damaging his front bumper. That moment was tiny compared to his Roberbertshaw Racing team-mate Harry Vaulkhard who is his Chevrolet Lacetti managed to loose it at the even faster Church corner complete 4 360 degree spins! Meanwhile Alan would end the free practice in 21st place.
The second Session was a little more of a headache as Alans session was cut short after he had a tyre let go going through Green and on the approch to the complex he pulled over to prevent any damage to the car. However he still set a time good enough for 23rd overall.
Qualifying was again held in dry conditons and like the 2 free Practice session in the morning the tyre wear would play an important factor in the short 20 minute session. Alan went in to qualifying knowing that the slippery shape of the Honda Integra would be good round the High Speed circuit. It was in 2005 when Dan Eaves won all 3 races in his Team Dynamics Honda Integra.
As the session got underway Alan started to look strong setting times that put him in a great 16th place after the first ten minutes. As the session progressed Alan was still going well having slipped just one place to 17th and he would hold that place right till the last lap of the session when he was pipped by Jason Hughes and John George. 19th place was still good and it showed that the car and driver wereo n the pace. "I am really pleased with the grid slot. I was a little annoyed I got pipped at the end there but I am ahead of both BTC Racing SEATS, the 2 Astra and Micky Doyle in his Civic, also it shows that my car is going well because I have always wanted to be right with John George and i have shown today i can do it. Roll on tomorrow!"
Race Day dawned and with a huge crowd, dry track and warm weather we were set for 3 great races at Thruxton. Lining up 19th on the grid Alan made a good start and on the run to the complex was squeezed out by the 2 SEATS dropping him to 21st. At the end of the first lap Alan and Gareth Howell both received drive-through penalties for out of position starts so Alan had 3 laps to take the penalty so on lap 3 he dived in to pits to take the penalty which basically cost him the race. Once rejoined Alan was last and was trying to make up as much of the 40 seconds he lost as possible. At the half way point Alan had passed Erkut Kazilirmak and was right with John George who was recovering after contact with Harry Vaulkhards Chevrolet at the Chicane. Lap 9 Alan was right with George and tried to go round the outside for the first part of the chicane but this resulted in a half spin and dropepd him back to 21st again and thats where he would finish at the Chequered Flag. "That was a Disaster. I was about 5 inches over the mark on the track and they penalised me so that ruined the race, oh well rules are the rules."
Race 2 Starting 21st Alan knew he had to make a great start to try and make up as many places as possible. On the run out of the complex Alan was in the middle of a 3 a breast sandwich with Harry Vaulkhard to his right and Chris Stockton on his left. As the trio approached Noble there was contact between Stockton and Taylor causing the SEAT spin accross Vaulkhard. This caused taylor to pit under the safety car which had been diployed to remove one of the Arkas Astra's that had gone off at the complex. After the race was restarted Alan was making steady progress up to 20th place when on lap 11 he had an enormous tank slapper at Church. The car span through 720 degrees just Missing Micky Doyle who symultaniously was blowing up his engine on the run up to the chicane. Alan rejoined the track after loosing a few seconds but had not lost a place following Doyles retirement. The following lap though Taylor would be forced in to the pits with a wiring loom fault on the car causing the engine to cut out and out of the race. " The car was going really well. I got squeezed at the start so had to pit as I thought I had a puncture. The I had the mother of all spins which was rather scary and made me dizzy too!"
Race 3 Saw Alan once again line up in 21st place on the grid following his retirement in race 2. As the lights went out Alan made a good start and held his position for the first lap and was setting his sights on John George and by lap 3 was passed the Cornishman at Allard after George made a mistake at the Chicane. As the first half of the race passed Alan was enjoying a fabulous scrap with Stockton and George for 19th place. After Stockton was elimiated at the Chicane by Jelley this promoted Alan to 19th place and closing on Hughes in the MG ZS. After a few retirments Alan was in 14th place and set for his best result of the season when on the penultimate lap his left front tyre blew going in to the chicane and this sent the Whitley Bay Driver in to the tyre wall with light damage. " I was suffering with understeer toward the end and I could see that Erkut was catching but I was trying to hang on but the tyre let go and off I went."
The next event is the biggest of the Year for Alan and the Robertshaw Racing team as its the home event at croft on 31st may-1st June.
